What Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Can Do

Home 9 Gastroenterology 9 What Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Can Do
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common afflictions seen by doctors today. At least 1 in 10 people are affected by this problem. There is no test to diagnose the issue. In fact, it appears that there is nothing wrong with the bowel upon examination. The pain, discomfort, and other symptoms do not seem to have any cause and do not go away. A diagnosis of IBS is made based upon your symptoms, so the range of what people experience can greatly vary.

In rare cases, the people suffering with IBS will experience strong reactions to even normal stimulation of the bowel. Menstruation, eating a meal, or stress can cause a flare up of symptoms. While it is possible to get better, this only happens to about 10% of sufferers each year. If you’re diagnosed with IBS, it is likely to be for a long time.

Because IBS is so common, and because it affects different people in different ways, it is often misunderstood. Many people consider it to be nothing more than “excessive gas” or give it some other dismissive oversimplification. This can make it difficult for those suffering with the condition to get the help they need outside the doctor’s office. For some people, this is a debilitating condition that affects every moment of their day. It can feel as though you are alone and cannot get any help, or gain any control over your life or your symptoms. Joining an online community can help. Make sure to talk to your friends and family about what you are dealing with, and ask them to help support you rather than tearing you down for a condition you have no control over.

While it is common, IBS is very misunderstood. If you are struggling with symptoms, it is important to get any help that you can. Talk to Dr. Davidson if you have any questions about the syndrome, or if you want to learn how to cope with it in your everyday life. There is no cure, only control, and having a support system is always a good idea.
